Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Illiterate rural women engaged in stone quarry work in Luwero districts face multiple challenges, including vulnerability to stone quarry landslides and meager incomes of less than $25/month. They manage 64% of households in the region, and yet they lack skills, and capital to explore alternative income trajectories. We have initiated a transformative program to empower them. By organizing them into groups, provide training in innovative maggot farming practices employing vertical and backyard farming techniques (MAGG-TECH), we aim to address their economic, health, and environmental concerns. Through MAGG-TECH, these women can now generate income by selling products such as Maggot protein concentrate and bio-organic fertilizer. This initiative contributes to climate change mitigation, as the maggots feed on food waste that would otherwise be disposed of in landfills, emitting methane. We have trained 200 women and raised awareness to 1500+ people. Moreover, 100 have started maggot farms, increasing their monthly income to $250+. Additionally, these farms consume 30 tonnes of food waste monthly, generating 10 tonnes of bio-fertilizer and contributing to eco-friendly waste remediation. Our goal is to educate a network of 30 million women in the next five years. We plan to achieve this through a robust outgrower system and collaborations.
