Project Summary / Description:
### Project Summary: Zambia Youth for Conservation, Agriculture, and Livelihood Action (ZYCALA) The Zambia Youth for Conservation, Agriculture, and Livelihood Action (ZYCALA) is a transformative initiative aimed at empowering Zambian youth to drive sustainable agricultural practices, enhance conservation efforts, and improve livelihoods. The project recognizes the critical role of young people in addressing the intertwined challenges of environmental degradation, food insecurity, and unemployment in Zambia. ZYCALA focuses on equipping young farmers, particularly those in rural and underserved areas, with the knowledge and tools needed to adopt climate-smart agriculture (CSA) techniques. These include agroecology, agroforestry, conservation agriculture, and integrated pest management. By aligning agricultural practices with ecological principles, ZYCALA promotes productivity while safeguarding natural resources and building climate resilience. The project also fosters entrepreneurial growth by facilitating market linkages, providing business development training, and improving access to agricultural financing. This enables youth to establish sustainable agro-enterprises, contributing to household income and creating green jobs within their communities. Through its conservation agenda, ZYCALA champions forest preservation, land restoration, and the adoption of eco-friendly technologies. It integrates youth into conservation projects, ensuring they play a central role in maintaining biodiversity and mitigating climate change impacts. A unique aspect of ZYCALA is its commitment to inclusivity, prioritizing the engagement of women, indigenous populations, and marginalized groups. The project builds leadership capacity among youth, enabling them to influence policies and decisions that shape the food system and environment. With a holistic approach combining education, capacity-building, and advocacy, ZYCALA has already positively impacted thousands of lives. It serves as a model for scalable interventions that address youth unemployment, foster conservation, and promote sustainable agriculture for a resilient and prosperous Zambia.

How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
The Zambia Youth for Conservation, Agriculture, and Livelihood Action (ZYCALA) plays a significant role in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by integrating sustainable agricultural practices with environmental conservation. The project is structured to address key sources of emissions while promoting long-term climate resilience. One of the primary ways ZYCALA impacts GHG emissions is by reducing reliance on conventional agricultural methods, which often involve heavy use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides that contribute to nitrous oxide emissions. Instead, the project encourages the adoption of agroecology, agroforestry, and conservation agriculture. These techniques enhance soil health, increase organic matter, and foster carbon sequestration in soils, effectively offsetting emissions. Agroforestry, a core component of ZYCALA, integrates trees with crops and livestock systems. This not only captures atmospheric carbon dioxide through tree growth but also reduces methane emissions by optimizing livestock feeding practices and improving manure management. The trees planted under agroforestry initiatives also provide an alternative source of fuelwood, reducing pressure on natural forests and mitigating deforestation—a major contributor to carbon emissions. In addition to promoting sustainable farming, ZYCALA facilitates the adoption of renewable energy technologies, such as solar-powered irrigation systems and efficient cooking stoves. These alternatives reduce dependence on fossil fuels and minimize carbon footprints within the target communities. The project also emphasizes land restoration and reforestation efforts. By regenerating degraded lands and establishing forested areas, ZYCALA enhances natural carbon sinks, counteracting emissions from other sectors. Its focus on biodiversity conservation further stabilizes ecosystems, ensuring greater resilience against climate change. Through education and capacity-building, ZYCALA empowers youth to champion practices that reduce emissions in their communities. By creating awareness and fostering behavioral change, the project amplifies its impact beyond its immediate beneficiaries, contributing to a broader reduction in GHG emissions at the regional level.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
The ZYCALA Project is committed to empowering traditionally underrepresented groups in the climate movement, including women, youth, and climate-vulnerable communities. We recognize that these groups often face disproportionate impacts from climate change yet possess valuable insights and solutions. To empower women, ZYCALA provides training and resources to enable their active participation in conservation agriculture and environmental initiatives. By involving women in decision-making processes and providing access to education and economic opportunities, we promote gender equality and empower women as leaders in climate action. Youth engagement is central to our approach, as young people are essential drivers of change. Through youth-led initiatives, educational programs, and capacity-building activities, ZYCALA empowers young individuals to become environmental advocates and change agents in their communities. Additionally, ZYCALA prioritizes marginalized and climate-vulnerable communities, working closely with local stakeholders to understand their unique challenges and needs. By incorporating their perspectives into project planning and implementation, we ensure that solutions are tailored to their specific circumstances, fostering resilience and sustainability. ZYCALA's inclusive approach not only amplifies the voices of those traditionally underrepresented in the climate movement but also fosters a more equitable and inclusive society where all individuals can actively participate in and benefit from climate action efforts.
