Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
The project aims to provide support to an estimated 16,958 coastal residents. We work closely with local communities to design and implement the project, engaging them using a participatory rural appraisal approach. We support the capacity development, capitalisation and legal incorporation of local Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to undertake mangrove restoration and effectively manage local resources, as well as to facilitate the community consent process in line with free, prior, and informed consent principles. Rather than treat communities as passive beneficiaries, our approach empowers them through benefit sharing of income from carbon credits. Our aim is for our CSO implementing partners to ultimately co-own the project (likely via a community trust). Long-term KPIs that ZSL will measure include changes in the number of communities with improved protection from typhoons and tsunamis through increased mangrove cover, and community members receiving income from project partners, broken down by gender. Our experience in the past has been that CSOs undertaking mangrove restoration are disproportionately run and implemented by women, youth and senior community members, as the men of working age typically have other income generation opportunities. ZSL’s mangrove restoration projects thus become a significant contributor to addressing poverty and inequality amongst marginalised groups.
