How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Replaces/avoids GHGs (e.g., projects that replace sources of GHGs, such as the burning of fossil fuels for electricity, heat, transport, or other energy uses)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
The “Luz en Casa” project has a direct impact on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions both directly and indirectly; however, it also benefits vulnerable and underrepresented groups, such as: • Children and young people: By having stable and continuous lighting on-demand, children and young people can study, share, and live safer. According to our yearly end-of-year baseline surveys, every beneficiary has reported that their lighting problems have been solved and almost everyone has switched from using batteries or candles to LED lighting. • Elderly: By having stable energy the quality of life of the elderly increases. There is a reduction of possible accidents due to trips or falls. • Vulnerable communities to climate change: Rural and remote communities that are difficult to access in Peru often remain uncommunicated due to extreme weather events, whether due to road blockages due to landslides, droughts that reduce accessibility by river, floods, or others. Having an autonomous and independent energy generation and supply system allows them to keep radios and cell phones charged daily, being able to organize themselves better and increase their resilience against climate change. Moreover, the project management model encourages integration and strengthens community identity.
