Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
ADES’ trains and empowers people to become independent resellers to sell stoves and raise awareness of environmental issues in communities. 60% of resellers are women who now have money for their family. Girls spend 360 hours per year collecting wood. ADES’ stoves empower them to allocate time for other necessities, such as school. Reducing smoke particles provides a health benefit for women and children. The WHO stated that approximately 18,000 women die prematurely each year in Madagascar due to exposure to smoke from traditional cooking. Reforestation receives 10% of ADES’ budget, creating jobs for both men and women planting over 1,000,000 trees and restoring 1,000 acres of Madagascar’s land. ADES works with local NGOs and community groups to help fund projects and educate people about the importance of their forests, allowing Malagasy people to lead reforestation projects. With native trees, ADES also plants trees that provide benefits for people. Fast growing trees provide alternative fuel sources while protecting native forests. Cash crops are also planted to provide food, nutrition, and income, combining poverty reduction with environmental conservation.
