Project Summary / Description:
Parco Italia is a nationwide afforestation, reforestation, and rewilding program in urban, periurban and extra-urban areas, that aims to expand the Italian forest ecosystem and ecological connections. https://www.parcoitalia.it/
How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Removes/stores GHGs (e.g., projects that capture, sequester, or otherwise enhance the "sinks" that accumulate and store GHGs)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Parco Italia's mission also influences the population of the most isolated territories and the younger generations, building a network that can provide support for the protection and growth of forest ecosystems, as well as help creating enabling conditions for sustainable forest management, innovation, cooperation and ecotourism, creating new related jobs. In fact, through the attempt to connect different areas of the country at an ecological level, the project also aims to promote a unitary vision of the territory, by establishing and integrating hiking trails, such as the Sentiero Italia by the CAI, and new potential routes, along with the expansion of buffer zones around national parks and including natural and semi-natural areas within protected areas, tourism and slow tourism, especially involving the communities of the territories at greatest risk of isolation and abandonment. The involvement of young people plays a central role, as Parco Italia's long-term vision is closely linked to the new generations who need support to counteract the sense of isolation that the areas of the Italian hinterland have been suffering for several years. In this process, small towns and villages along these paths have the potential to become central nodes in areas with high sustainable development prospects.
