How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Replaces/avoids GHGs (e.g., projects that replace sources of GHGs, such as the burning of fossil fuels for electricity, heat, transport, or other energy uses)', 'Removes/stores GHGs (e.g., projects that capture, sequester, or otherwise enhance the "sinks" that accumulate and store GHGs)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Smallholder farmers, around 500 million globally, typically cultivate less than 5 acres of land, often in remote, hard-to-reach areas, with only 7% commercially integrated into supply chains. Additionally, this demographic is highly vulnerable to climate change, with changing rainfall patterns, rising temperatures, degrading soil, drought and floods. These events can destroy entire harvests, significantly increasing the risks associated with agriculture. Supporting these farmers' transition to agro-forestry and sustainable practices, along with providing financial incentives, is crucial to mitigate these challenges. At aQysta, we prioritize onboarding at least 50% female and youth farmers, as they face additional barriers in accessing resources and opportunities. By providing access to markets and eliminating the need for initial investments in agricultural technology, we remove two major barriers for female and youth farmers. Our model extends support to marginalized and indigenous communities with no discrimination of caste or ethnicity. The driving force behind aQysta's innovations comes from its founder, Pratap Thapa, who grew up in a Nepalese farming community and directly experienced the challenges faced by farmers. aQysta team is local and diverse, with 30% of female workers, 20% holding management positions and a youthful workforce, with 64% of the team under 30 years.
