How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Replaces/avoids GHGs (e.g., projects that replace sources of GHGs, such as the burning of fossil fuels for electricity, heat, transport, or other energy uses)', 'Reduces GHGs (e.g., projects that reduce sources of GHGs, such as through efficiency or other changes in consumption)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Our target areas for investment are Sustainable Materials, Coal-to-Chemicals, Critical minerals, Industrial decarbonization, Heavy transport (Shipping, Aviation, Mining Equipment and other HDV) decarbonization, Sustainable Food. There are well-entrenched value chains around each of these areas and sustainable solutions we cobuild will have significant impact on stakeholders that are usually not represented or underrepresented. For example, moving away from coal mitigates pollution and emissions from coal. However, millions of people in underdeveloped parts of India and other developing economies depend on it as their sole source of income. Similarly, regenerative agriculture practices, while sustainable, decrease land productivity during the transition phase. This impacts the financial well-being of small hold farmers - many of whom are women - in rural communities disproportionately. In line with our vision, we take these factors into consideration explicitly while selecting and building the startups by proactively engaging these community stakeholders. The co-founders of Ashwatta are core members of IITMAA-SIAG - a voluntary group of IIT Madras alumni to engage NGOs and support social causes - since 2021. Through this forum, we will engage with these communities and identify NGOs for future collaboration to sustainably build and scale our startups.
