How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Replaces/avoids GHGs (e.g., projects that replace sources of GHGs, such as the burning of fossil fuels for electricity, heat, transport, or other energy uses)', 'Reduces GHGs (e.g., projects that reduce sources of GHGs, such as through efficiency or other changes in consumption)', 'Removes/stores GHGs (e.g., projects that capture, sequester, or otherwise enhance the "sinks" that accumulate and store GHGs)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Asia Initiatives works with the most underserved and remote communities in vulnerable geographies. All our work is pro-environment, pro-women and pro-community. For example, we are working in Maharashtra’s “suicide belt”, where many farmers have committed suicides due to debt burden brough about by draughts and crop failures. This has led to feminization of farming, and poverty. These women farmers were toiling for long hours while standing and bending over in wet rice paddies, which exposed them to various health conditions. While rice can be cultivated in two seasons, the summer crop depends on water availability. This is especially worrying in Maharashtra as also Odisha, the other area of our SRI/SMI work, as these regions have experienced a staggering four fold increase of drought over the past ten years. The instability of this changing climate has resulted in loss of incomes, and poverty. By implementing the System of Rice/Millet Intensification (SRI, SMI), farmers increase their yields and their incomes while minimizing drudgery. Elevated income and more time for other activities also enhance women’s status in the family and their confidence, eventually helping women become leaders, and agents for poverty alleviation, climate resilience and food security.
