Project Summary / Description:
The initiative focuses on transitioning care workers from petrol and diesel vehicles to electric vehicles (EVs) in order to reduce carbon emissions. The goal is to promote sustainability within the care sector by providing environmentally friendly transportation solutions for care workers, helping lower the sector’s carbon footprint while enhancing efficiency and contributing to cleaner air.
How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Reduces GHGs (e.g., projects that reduce sources of GHGs, such as through efficiency or other changes in consumption)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
The care workforce is undervalued, underserved, and underfunded. BelleVie was founded to transform care work in the UK, inspired by the Dutch “Buurtzorg” model, creating empowered, self-managing teams of care workers. This project is driven by a commitment to both people and the planet. The care workforce, 85% female and largely part-time, reflects national trends. Over 90% of homecare workers rely on cars to support older or vulnerable people, collectively driving more than 4 million miles daily. However, as a low-wage workforce, care workers often cannot prioritise climate impact when choosing vehicles. High running costs are forcing many to leave the sector, with a 2024 survey showing nearly a third considering giving up their cars due to rising costs. With the UK and EU set to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2035, electric vehicles (EVs) remain out of reach for many care workers, as they are often seen as a luxury for wealthier individuals. Only 11% of UK EV owners are female, despite women holding 49% of driving licences. A social-EV leasing scheme would address these barriers, enabling care workers to access sustainable, cost-effective transportation, reducing emissions, and supporting workforce retention.
