Primary Project Category:
How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Reduces GHGs (e.g., projects that reduce sources of GHGs, such as through efficiency or other changes in consumption)', 'Removes/stores GHGs (e.g., projects that capture, sequester, or otherwise enhance the "sinks" that accumulate and store GHGs)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Our project generates a significant positive impact at the social level, as it valorizes agro-industrial waste and directly benefits the communities that produce it. A key example is the prickly pear cactus, of which in Peru only the fruit is used, while the “penca” (the unused part) is usually discarded, generating environmental impacts. These prickly pears are grown mainly by peasant communities in the Peruvian highlands, from whom we buy the prickly pears that were previously worthless. In this way, we create a new business model that improves their quality of life. This approach is replicated with other products, such as cocoa, benefiting cocoa-growing communities, many of which are closely linked to the indigenous peoples of the Peruvian jungle. We involve young people under the age of 30, who actively participate. These young people are assigned tasks such as raw material selection, drying, product evaluation, training and other activities that promote their interest in processes based on the circular economy. It is important to note that 90% of these young people are women, who feel empowered by being part of a sustainable production network, based on the circular economy and with a direct impact on environmental protection.
