Impact on Underrepresented Groups:

From its inception Borderlands’ P.O.W.W.O.W. project has been driven by the communities it serves, as well as a board of directors which is composed completely of people of color and 60% women. Borderlands empowers marginalized communities by providing access to fresh produce, fostering community discussions between individuals which often have no voice, and demystifying new foods and cooking techniques. According to delivery data provided by Doordash 40% of the individuals receiving our produce are considered low-income. 

We provide information on the fight against climate change and ensure the communities we serve are aware of the impact they have by attending our events. We encourage community members to discuss amongst themselves on our platforms and share unique ways in which they prevent food waste using the produce we provide. Ranging from sharing recipes, to showcasing traditional food preservation techniques, as well as composting methods and gardening. Information being shared to groups which otherwise are left out of the climate movement entirely due to lack of support is made all the more powerful and sustainable when the message is being shared by the community itself.

Unlike traditional food-banks we have no requirements as it relates to income, documentation, or any other limitations.

Borderlands Produce Rescue believes in the inherent right of people to eat nutritiously, and that everyone has the right to live on a clean planet. Our mission is to reduce pollution due to food waste while addressing issues of food insecurity as well as promoting sustainable agriculture and composting practices.
