How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Replaces/avoids GHGs (e.g., projects that replace sources of GHGs, such as the burning of fossil fuels for electricity, heat, transport, or other energy uses)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Construction of green mini-grids and enabling PUE in rural areas empowers underrepresented groups by promoting economic opportunities, improving health, and increasing resilience to climate change. Women benefit through reduced labor (less time spent gathering fuel or water), increased income opportunities (e.g., small businesses, agricultural processing), and better health from clean energy alternatives that reduce indoor air pollution and improve respiratory health. Youth gain jobs, digital learning, and entrepreneurial opportunities, addressing unemployment and curbing migration to cities. Climate-vulnerable communities improve food security and resilience through energy-powered innovations like climate-smart farming, water pumps, and refrigeration. CEI Africa incorporates gender equality and inclusion as key priorities across its investment operations. Its Technical Assistance Facility helps its portfolio and pipeline companies address gender gaps through capacity building, leadership coaching for women, HR manual development, gender-responsive strategies, and market studies to enhance women's participation in energy sector. CEI Africa applies 2X Challenge criteria, requiring investees to demonstrate at least 10% women employees, with commitments to reach 20% for additional funding. Mini-grid projects also include targeted refugee camp initiatives. By embedding gender and inclusion criteria in our investment operations, CEI Africa ensures clean energy solutions benefit underrepresented groups while advancing broader participation in the climate movement.

Mission Statement:
Improve access to affordable clean energy through four main impact objectives: (1) increasing access to finance for Africa's emerging off-grid energy-access businesses; (2) expanding off-grid renewable energy providers and solutions, (3) increasing renewable energy access for MSMEs and households; (4) additional economic, social and environmental benefits resulting from energy access.
