How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Replaces/avoids GHGs (e.g., projects that replace sources of GHGs, such as the burning of fossil fuels for electricity, heat, transport, or other energy uses)', 'Reduces GHGs (e.g., projects that reduce sources of GHGs, such as through efficiency or other changes in consumption)', 'Removes/stores GHGs (e.g., projects that capture, sequester, or otherwise enhance the "sinks" that accumulate and store GHGs)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Although Chaconut started out solely to produce affordable charcoal briquettes to fight energy poverty in Ghana, now we recognize that it is more impactful to transfer the skills of making briquettes to the communities we serve then provide the technology needed to enable them turn any organic accessible biomass into clean cooking fuel. Through this model, we seek to shift the power to convert wastes into clean fuel to under-served communities in both rural and urban settings. Currently, there are few producers of charcoal briquettes in Ghana who are compelled to sell in high-end supermarkets or export due to high production cost. Chaconut has diversified its raw materials and developed its own kiln – enabling us to reduce production cost. Our briquettes are retailed by women who already sell lump charcoal and we create awareness about the effects of traditional fuels on health and the environment via facilities used for local information broadcasting in low-income communities in Ghana. Households that use our charcoal briquettes save at least 30% on cooking fuel. Chaconut ultimately seeks to revolutionize the charcoal industry by steering it away from solely depending on trees and incorporating organic residues that currently are but only wastes.
