Project Summary / Description:
The project started in June 2023 and involves working with neighborhood associations to set up community composting systems, which are used by around 20 families. The program includes environmental education, composting training, and capacity building for community organization. To date, we have worked with 7 neighborhood associations, which compost approximately 250 kg of organic waste per month. Our goal is to expand the number of participating families in each neighborhood association and to collaborate with more neighborhood associations.
How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Reduces GHGs (e.g., projects that reduce sources of GHGs, such as through efficiency or other changes in consumption)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Our project empowers underrepresented groups by directly involving them in the design, implementation, and benefits of community composting initiatives. We prioritize working with climate-vulnerable communities, particularly those in low-income areas, where waste management services are often insufficient. By engaging neighborhood associations in these areas, we build local capacity to address environmental challenges while fostering collective action. Women play a central role in our project, as they are often the primary caregivers and decision-makers in household waste management. We provide targeted training for women, enabling them to lead composting initiatives and become advocates for sustainable practices within their communities
