Project Summary / Description:
The Crece Selva Misionera project aims to reforest and conserve the Atlantic Forest in Misiones, Argentina, promoting biodiversity and sustainable development. It was launched by Hora de Obrar in 2020 in response to deforestation, ecosystem degradation, and the impacts of climate change, such as droughts and wildfires. Through reforestation with native species and the implementation of agroforestry systems, the project seeks to improve soil quality, protect critical habitats, and mitigate climate change. The initiative is carried out in collaboration with faith communities of the Evangelical Church of the River Plate (IERP), the Mbya-Guaranà Indigenous communities, the government, and civil society organizations. It actively involves local communities through workshops and educational campaigns in schools and cooperatives. By doing so, Crece Selva Misionera contributes to the conservation of natural heritage and strengthens community resilience, ensuring a sustainable future for the region.
How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Removes/stores GHGs (e.g., projects that capture, sequester, or otherwise enhance the "sinks" that accumulate and store GHGs)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Our project focuses on empowering indigenous communities, small farmers, and rural women, who are often underrepresented in the climate movement. Through training programs in agroforestry and reforestation, we provide the necessary tools for these groups to adopt sustainable practices that enhance their resilience to climate change, creating economic opportunities and strengthening their adaptive capacity. The team is mainly composed of young people and local leaders who represent and understand the realities of the communities we work with. This representation ensures that project decisions are inclusive and reflect the needs and aspirations of the involved groups. Additionally, we ensure that women, particularly in rural areas, play an active role in decision-making and in implementing activities, which enhances their economic and social empowerment. By involving these groups in co-creating solutions and managing natural resources, we give them control over their own future, allowing them to play a key role in mitigating climate change and restoring ecosystems.
