Project Summary / Description:
Restore Africa is the world’s largest community-led, nature-based carbon removal programme. The programme currently spans six African countries - Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia – restoring almost two million hectares while supporting 1.5 million smallholder farmers and their communities. After piloting in Kenya with support by Temasek, the programme accelerated with a catalytic US$150 million commitment of private capital from Climate Asset Management in 2020. This laid the foundation for the mobilisation of additional investments to expand the programme further, supporting millions more vulnerable farming families with improved livelihoods, while mitigating the impacts of climate change at a globally significant scale. Restore Africa is being rolled-out across East and Southern Africa, and is set for massive-landscape restoration efforts in Central and West Africa, using the international carbon market as a driver and deploying private capital to restore nature and improve biodiversity for communities on the ground.
How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Removes/stores GHGs (e.g., projects that capture, sequester, or otherwise enhance the "sinks" that accumulate and store GHGs)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
The Alliance is committed to enhancing gender and disability inequalities and builds these values into the Restore Africa Programme by working with member organisations that have expertise and experience with these concerns. Also, by promoting nature-based evergreening farming practices that are easy to apply, inexpensive and easily taught, the Programme increases the strength of the communities, allowing women the opportunity to provide for their families and to share the skills learnt with other women farmers. Part of the activities resulting from the Programme include establishing nurseries and employing outreach workers. There is great focus on keeping youth in communities by creating employment opportunities which also improves the social cohesion in these communities.
