Project Summary / Description:
Our initiative is empowering marginalised communities that are off-grid, without electricity and running water, suffering from climate change impacts that amplify their pre-existing inequalities of water insecurity and lack of education that disproportionately impact youth, especially girls and young women. Through our solar installations, we are leveraging just transition of clean energy to power schools that impart vocational learning to youth, especially girls, in these communities, taking them away from a life of drugs, crime and gender-based exploitation and preparing them for employment and self-reliance.
How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Replaces/avoids GHGs (e.g., projects that replace sources of GHGs, such as the burning of fossil fuels for electricity, heat, transport, or other energy uses)', 'Reduces GHGs (e.g., projects that reduce sources of GHGs, such as through efficiency or other changes in consumption)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Our project focusses solely on women, youth from third world marginalised communities. Our project addresses the critical impacts of energy poverty amongst marginalised off-grid communities of the global south. These communities dépend entirely on fossil fuels for their energy needs, thereby aggravting global warming. Lack of electricity and running water compounds their vulnerability, impacting their economy , health , education and safety especially of women and girls. It is these challenges that our project addresses through the implementation of innovative clean energy solutions that help to power schools that provide vocational , STEM and IT skills to youth , esepcially girls, creating employment pathways and taking them out of the vicious cycle of drugs, crime and sexual exploitation. Additionally, we deploy solar street lights that increase the safety of women and girls in these remote villages, where going out in the night at dark is fraught with danger. Our project also deploys agrovoltaic solar solutions, that provide these communities with perennial running water and an energy source that enables them to resume farming, thereby improving their economic situation, while simultaenously reducing their fossil fuel usage dramatically , thereby making our initiative a nature positive solution.
