Project Summary / Description:
The Recycle Organics Program aims to accelerate the implementation of methane mitigation projects in the waste sector and create enabling conditions for a sustained expansion of organic waste management technologies that bring significant environmental, economic, and social benefits. It also aims to create a community of practice in the regions it supports, raise awareness of concrete actions that can reduce methane emissions, and build capacity.
How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Replaces/avoids GHGs (e.g., projects that replace sources of GHGs, such as the burning of fossil fuels for electricity, heat, transport, or other energy uses)', 'Reduces GHGs (e.g., projects that reduce sources of GHGs, such as through efficiency or other changes in consumption)', 'Removes/stores GHGs (e.g., projects that capture, sequester, or otherwise enhance the "sinks" that accumulate and store GHGs)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
The SIDS project focuses on climate vulnerable communities in small, developing island (Grenada, Saint Lucia, Fiji, and Samoa) and coastal (Belize and Guyana) nations that are impacted by sea level rise and severe storms. Additionally, the countries’ populations are majority people of color. The Program provides direct benefits and empowers local organic waste management champions. The team provides education and capacity-building to national and municipal authorities, local focal points, project developers, and home composting monitors to build a network that is engaged in organic waste management and expansion of the project’s impact. Within the home composting program to date, women have been particularly empowered to participate in and benefit from the project’s activities. Of the 12 monitors that have been trained in home composting and employed part-time by the project, 50% are women. Additionally, most beneficiaries of the home composting program that have received composting equipment and training have been women (73%). Monitoring in Belize in October and November of 2024 showed that female participants are highly satisfied with the program, rating it an average of 8.7 out of 10. Within the Program’s organization, one of the two Program Directors and more than 50% of the team members are women.
