Project Summary / Description:
The project "Access to energy and energy efficiency for low-carbon development in rural areas, Togo and Benin", implemented by IDID ONG in partnership with GERES, aims to improve access to clean and sustainable energy for rural populations while promoting energy efficiency. Located in several municipalities in Benin (Bantè, Ouèssè, Tchaourou, Bassila) and Togo (commune of Lacs 1), the project focuses on two specific objectives: on the one hand, to provide adapted technical solutions for access to electricity and energy efficiency for Very Small Enterprises (VSEs) and women's groups, and on the other hand, to support these actors in optimizing the economic and social impact of the solutions adopted. By relying on energy diagnostics, the project was able to identify the needs of the beneficiaries and propose various solutions, such as Electrified Activity Zones (ZAE) and productive solar kits. In parallel, 110 agro-processing groups have benefited from improved stoves to reduce wood consumption and improve sanitary conditions. The project also includes a capacity building component, aimed at training entrepreneurs on business management, developing business plans and accessing financing. By integrating gender approaches and promoting the inclusion of young people, the project aims to establish a sustainable distribution channel for energy solutions, thus contributing to sustainable economic development and the fight against climate change in these vulnerable rural areas.
How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Replaces/avoids GHGs (e.g., projects that replace sources of GHGs, such as the burning of fossil fuels for electricity, heat, transport, or other energy uses)', 'Reduces GHGs (e.g., projects that reduce sources of GHGs, such as through efficiency or other changes in consumption)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
We place a special emphasis on empowering women, who play a crucial role in agri-food and energy activities. Around 70% of the beneficiaries of our training and technical solutions are women, which allows them to access clean cooking technologies and energy efficiency solutions, while improving their entrepreneurial skills. We also target young people by engaging them in training focused on green entrepreneurship and offering them employment opportunities in promising sectors, such as renewable energy. By integrating training modules on leadership and business management, we contribute to their power to act.
