Project Summary / Description:
The primary objective of the project is to create an environmentally sustainable and income earning opportunity for the community of Seaview Gardens which would allow residents to improve both the quality of the natural environment, and their quality of life. The project will include the installation of renewable energy systems at the primary school in the phase 1 segment of the community with a possible extension to the Deliverance Centre Basic School and adjoining church that serves the phase 2 segment of the community. It will also include the set-up and maintenance of anaerobic composting infrastructures at both locations that will improve upon the waste management issues that were the focus of the previous project. Training will also be conducted with at least 50 community members to ensure that these practices are also maintained in the home to stem the issue of garbage pile-up. The project also aims to certify at least 20 residents in solar installation and sustainability, further increasing employability and potential income-earning opportunities for community members A secondary objective of the project is to model sustainable community management for other communities, information that will be disseminated via reports, social media engagement and the JCCYC’s Environmentally Speaking Podcast.
How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Replaces/avoids GHGs (e.g., projects that replace sources of GHGs, such as the burning of fossil fuels for electricity, heat, transport, or other energy uses)', 'Reduces GHGs (e.g., projects that reduce sources of GHGs, such as through efficiency or other changes in consumption)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
The project seeks to empower underrepresented groups. Seaview Gardens, like many Jamaican communities, is populated by people of color, and matriarchal households. This is also a climate vulnerable community, being surrounded by the city dump and industrial area as well as being situated within the Kingston Metropolitan area that is undergoing heat stress from climate change. The community is further underserved by not receiving expected national services such as garbage collection. The school within the community also has issues with overcrowding and overheating in classrooms. The project seeks to target these communal community areas that affect youth, women and vulnerable groups.
