Impact on Underrepresented Groups:

The project has a distinct environmental justice component. 

For example, we can claim to be directly helping Taiwan (23 million). Taiwan uses the most coal-based power per capita of any other place on earth, yet it harms air quality to dangerous levels and leads to substantial carbon emissions. The government reports that “the nation's air quality in recent years has been greatly improved and that efforts to control air pollution have paid off” (air.moenv.gov.tw). The reality is that most of the pollution can be traced back to burning coal. Despite this fact, the government is aiming to augment coal produced electricity. The LowCarbonPower team is contributing to a net zero report weighing pros and cons of different energy choices against carbon reduction, cost and health factors.

We are also partnering with agencies in Africa and other emerging economies to develop better (and more digestible) resources for the public to understand different energy choices for government investment to meet growing demand. We’re working with Clean Energy Hub in Nigeria, an NGO that focuses on helping the public better understand the social and environmental costs of different energy investments.
