Project Summary / Description:
The project aims to plant about 100000 Palmyra Palm (Borassus flabellifer) along the east coast near 50 coastal villages located in Mayiladuthurai, Karaikal and Nagapattinam districts in Tamil Nadu. Till today we have planted about 5000 seedling with the support of local donors and sponsors. This simple project is highly possible and efficient methodology for carbon sink with no GHG emission. The carbon sequestration rate was higher in Coastal sites of Palmyra palm leaf (48.35%) than in Inland sites (45.75%) besides the trees are become barriers against Tsunami and other disasters hence we selected coastal region for better results. A grown Palmyra Palm tree can absorbs 10 to 40 Kgs of carbon in a year. Thus we plan to reduce 1000 to 4000 tons of carbon every year. Unlike other forestry it doesn’t require more water and much care hence it has almost no GHG emission. The long coastal area can be cover with Palmyra which can support livelihood of local people by its various parts as raw material for huge number of handicraft material. The project will be executed with the participation of the local villagers in order to transfer the responsibility of further maintenance.
How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Replaces/avoids GHGs (e.g., projects that replace sources of GHGs, such as the burning of fossil fuels for electricity, heat, transport, or other energy uses)', 'Reduces GHGs (e.g., projects that reduce sources of GHGs, such as through efficiency or other changes in consumption)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
The project will enhance the coastal based livelihood activities and natural firewood replacing the kitchen fossil oil. This will empower the community with new livelihood options. Besides the Palmyra trees are being natural barrier protect the coastal communities from the feasible natural calamities such as cyclone and Tsunami.
