Primary Project Category:
How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Replaces/avoids GHGs (e.g., projects that replace sources of GHGs, such as the burning of fossil fuels for electricity, heat, transport, or other energy uses)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
In developing countries, women often carry the burden of providing drinking water for the household. Globally women spend 200 million hours each day collecting water. This time increases as women are mostly responsible for boiling water and collecting firewood. With climate change affecting not only the quantity and quality of water, but also the availability of firewood, the time spent providing water will only increase. A study conducted by UC Santa Clara found that rural households in Java, Indonesia spend on average 4 hours per week providing drinking water for their families. Women who use Nazava save 139 hours per year since they no longer need to collect firewood and boil. Furthermore, when a family member falls ill from drinking dirty water or inhaling smoke caused by indoor air pollution, it is women who must take care of them. By providing safe drinking water without the need to boil or use electricity, Nazava Water Filters empower women with better health, cost and time savings. Nazava also provides women with employment. In addition to having a female founder, 60% of our overall staff are women.
