Primary Project Category:
How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Reduces GHGs (e.g., projects that reduce sources of GHGs, such as through efficiency or other changes in consumption)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Environmental racism pervades even the most affluent cities, and New York City is no exception. In East Harlem, chronically high asthma rates, poor nutrition habits, and increased mental health issues paint a stark picture. The message of overconsumption, especially in fashion, beauty, and food, is ingrained from birth, promising success but often leading to debt, depression, and poor health. The Sustainable Fashion Community Center (SFCC) endeavors to educate neighbors about the negative impacts of these industries on the environment, workers, and consumer insecurities. We offer an alternative to retail therapy, emphasizing relationships over consumption. Our diverse community transcends age, race, gender, education, and economic status. Everyone is welcome to participate, recognizing that fashion is universal, seeking deals is universal, and there's a universal need for energetic, positive volunteer and service activities. At The SFCC, we strive to foster a community where sustainable practices and genuine connections flourish. Our space allows people to swap clothing and repair pieces through our repair cafe.
