Project Summary / Description:
Ongeza Zao na Pato is spearheading a transformative initiative to bolster smallholder farming in Kilifi County, Kenya. This project focuses on empowering farmers by introducing researched pulse varieties and climate-smart farming techniques. By addressing the root causes of poverty and subsistence farming, we aim to create a sustainable agricultural model that can significantly enhance food security, improve soil health, and increase farmers' incomes, ultimately contributing to the region's economic resilience.
How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Reduces GHGs (e.g., projects that reduce sources of GHGs, such as through efficiency or other changes in consumption)', 'Removes/stores GHGs (e.g., projects that capture, sequester, or otherwise enhance the "sinks" that accumulate and store GHGs)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Empowers underrepresented groups, particularly smallholder farmers in Kilifi County, many of whom are women, youth, and individuals from rural, climate-vulnerable communities. These groups are disproportionately affected by climate change, facing barriers such as limited access to resources, knowledge, and market opportunities. Providing climate-resilient crops, smart farming techniques, and market access, we enable them to adapt to changing climate conditions, improve productivity, and increase financial stability. Women, in particular, play a central role in agriculture in the region, yet they often lack access to decision-making power and resources. Our project actively includes women in all stages of implementation, from training sessions to leadership roles in local farming groups, ensuring that they have equal opportunities for empowerment. Focus on youth by offering training and career development in sustainable agriculture, giving them tools to become climate leaders in their communities. Our organization reflects this commitment - diversity in its leadership team and ensuring that the voices of marginalized communities are heard. Prioritize inclusivity, working closely with local leaders to ensure solutions are culturally appropriate and meet the unique needs of these vulnerable groups. Fostering a more equitable and sustainable agricultural system -empower those who are often left behind in the broader climate movement.
