Project Summary / Description:
The "Indigenous Land Titling in Loreto, Peru" project supports Indigenous communities in Loreto, Peru, with securing community-held land title to their ancestral lands. Studies show that forests where Indigenous communities hold secure land title have greater carbon sequestration and lower deforestation than other protected areas. Supporting communities in securing land title is an enabling condition for greater carbon storage in the Amazon rainforest, a crucial landscape for nature-based carbon sequestration.
How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Removes/stores GHGs (e.g., projects that capture, sequester, or otherwise enhance the "sinks" that accumulate and store GHGs)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
All of RFUS’s programming is designed in partnership with, and in service of, Indigenous peoples and local communities. RFUS recognizes that key actions can be taken to ensure the effective participation of Indigenous women and youth while working with Indigenous organizations and communities. Indigenous women are at the forefront of climate impacts and therefore the climate movement. They face complex and diverse challenges, ranging from struggling to secure land rights to limited access to education and healthcare. RFUS prioritizes gender and social inclusion through affirmative actions, which span across all programs. In Peru, RFUS has a local Gender and Social Inclusion Specialist who works to incorporate affirmative actions into programming, such as dismantling gender-based assumptions on suitable roles for women and overcoming barriers to participation. This includes providing childcare during meetings and workshops to encourage women to participate. RFUS also uses its programming to engage and train youth. Persistent social and economic inequalities have driven Indigenous youth to move from rural to urban areas in Peru, as well as migrate out of the country. Providing employment opportunities allows young people to earn income, remain engaged with their communities, and develop leadership and other marketable skills.
