How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Replaces/avoids GHGs (e.g., projects that replace sources of GHGs, such as the burning of fossil fuels for electricity, heat, transport, or other energy uses)', 'Reduces GHGs (e.g., projects that reduce sources of GHGs, such as through efficiency or other changes in consumption)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
ReFuse empowers underrepresented and underserved groups, including informal waste workers and refugees, by actively engaging them in sustainable waste management practices. Waste workers, often marginalized and excluded from formal labor markets, are given fair employment opportunities, providing them with stable income, safety, and dignity. These workers play a crucial role in our operations, contributing to the recycling process while benefiting from our focus on fair jobs and social equity. We target underserved communities, including refugees, by setting up collection points in areas where waste management infrastructure is insufficient or nonexistent. Involving them, we not only improve their local environment but also create opportunities for economic participation through waste collection, sorting, and recycling. These efforts reduce their vulnerability to climate change impacts as droughts, while empowering them with the skills and knowledge to contribute to the circular economy. ReFuse was created by 4 youth LGBT co-founders in the social complexity of the Middle East. Our effort towards inclusion, social acceptance is a heartfelt sentiment. The social enterprise is part of the MENA Youth for Climate Action initiative (MYCA), and, as a youth serving social enterprise, we engage with local associations in and outside Lebanon to foster youth-led climate positive initiatives.
