Primary Project Category:
How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Removes/stores GHGs (e.g., projects that capture, sequester, or otherwise enhance the "sinks" that accumulate and store GHGs)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
100% of Releaf's team are Nigerians, with >90% of the team growing up in Rural Nigeria. 30% of management are women. 98% of Releaf's 3,000 smallholder farmers suppliers live in poverty. They achieve yields 15-20% of their potential. The inclusion of biochar to increase yields and generate revenue in USD via carbon credit sales will enable Releaf to pay 25% higher prices for their products and improve their yields. If Releaf can increase our median farmer's income by 50% they will escape poverty into lower middle income. Our farmers are the most impacted group by climate change on the planet: average temperature increases driven by climate change are 150% higher in Africa than any other region. Today, Nigeria, a country with 230 million people is the poverty capital of the world. Africa has struggled to industrialize for 60 years because its centralized governments have not built enabling infrastructure (roads, electricity, central bank policy etc.) for export-oriented trade. Carbon credits present a $1T opportunity for Africans to export carbon credits from their villages and earn foreign currency without ports, roads, or other public infrastructure. It it an imperative for Africa to lead carbon removal and earn foreign currency.
