How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Replaces/avoids GHGs (e.g., projects that replace sources of GHGs, such as the burning of fossil fuels for electricity, heat, transport, or other energy uses)', 'Reduces GHGs (e.g., projects that reduce sources of GHGs, such as through efficiency or other changes in consumption)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Led by an accomplished woman founder, Roca is committed to leading by example in the climate space. We take our role as developers of a new technology very seriously and recognize that there are many important stakeholders in this process, including indigenous peoples, local communities, government organizations, and large corporations. Although we are a very small startup at the moment, we are already investing time to understand who key stakeholders are in the development of our technology and what local government and non-government organizations we should engage with. Related to this, we are passionate about small-scale science education outreach in our local community to help underrepresented groups gain exposure to topics of water resource management, chemistry, engineering, and climate solutions. This type of exposure can encourage members of underserved communities to become involved in climate issues and technologies early on, which should further benefit their communities in the future. We are also are aware of the profound impact representation has on young people and historically disadvantaged groups in finding success in technical careers, which is another motivating factor for community outreach. Our team is ethnically diverse and 50% female, and we are thoughtful about maintaining a diverse team moving forward.
