Impact on Underrepresented Groups:

Route 360 Solutions Initiative (R360SI) collaborates with underserved communities and marginalized youth and women to tackle climate change. These groups help in providing information about their experiences with climate change and how they believe it could be solved, while R360SI helps bring the solution to life. For instance, when asked how CO2 emitted by frequently burning plastic waste could be mitigated, they proposed developing a tool for efficient collection post-use. Hence, R360SI designed the Route 360 mobile app and took it to them for feedback. With their feedback, the app features were improved and is now used to collect plastic waste for recycling. 

Besides collaborating, R360SI equips marginalized youth and women as waste pickers and recyclers. Using the Route 360 mobile app, the waste pickers collect single-use plastic waste from households and local waste centers for recycling. Post-collection, the recyclers use a sand-polymer and an extrusion process — allowing plastic and sand to be heated at 109℃, using an 80-20 percent formula, where 80% is the sand and 20% is the plastic used in manufacturing the bricks — to recycle the waste into eco-friendly building materials for house construction and outdoor pavement.
