Project Summary / Description:
Landesa’s Coastal Livelihoods and Mangroves Project is a multi-year initiative to mitigate up to 943 million metric tons of carbon by protecting up to 4.6 million hectares of mangrove forests and strengthening coastal tenure rights for up to 73 million people in the Bay of Bengal and Southeast Asia.
How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Removes/stores GHGs (e.g., projects that capture, sequester, or otherwise enhance the "sinks" that accumulate and store GHGs)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Landesa recognizes the people most impacted by climate change are also those galvanizing solutions. Our approach to climate justice champions women and Indigenous Peoples by securing and strengthening their land rights—a powerful solution to build equity and mitigate climate change. Under the Coastal Livelihoods and Mangroves Project, Landesa’s partnerships operate alongside collaboration with Indigenous communities in the coastal areas of Indonesia, as well as vulnerable ethnic national populations in the coastal areas of Myanmar and Thailand. We will continue and expand support for Indigenous and ethnic community governance and promote the leadership of women—central to our approach. These activities to promote Indigenous data sovereignty include training and co-implementation of data collection through our mapping program, joint titling of women and men in the certification of community forests, and work with women leaders in research on the livelihoods impacts of mangrove areas. Women are central to the stewardship of these coastal forests. Building on years of experience bolstering women’s forest and land-based livelihoods, Landesa works to strengthen tenure rights for the most vulnerable women and men living in coastal communities throughout areas of the region so they can defend and restore indispensable mangrove forests.
