How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Removes/stores GHGs (e.g., projects that capture, sequester, or otherwise enhance the "sinks" that accumulate and store GHGs)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
The target market of Soil Doctors is low-income people farming rural dry areas. Research shows that the Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs) of Kenya make up over 80 percent of the country, covering 29 counties and a population of about 16 million people, while in Africa, the ASALS comprise of about 55 percent of the land. Due to these low rains, the region is susceptible to climate change and is regularly affected by famine. Application of carbon sink planters will guarantee survival rate of the young trees growing in dry lands by 85% compared to the normal (30%). Soil Doctors contribute to restoring the global ecosystem by manufacturing microclimate planters that increase the seedling/ sapling survival rate by over 85 percent in water -scarce settings. The planters minimize water and time used to irrigate young trees through a water conservation technique in the planter. By turning waste into biochar and making carbon sink planters that utilizes rock minerals such as olivine with previous scientific studies showing that1kg of olivine absorbs 1kg of CO2 from atmosphere, Soil Doctors helps in capturing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
