Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
As the large majority of island presidents in the Maldives are men, we find other ways for women to be part of decision-making in Namoona projects. For example, the Women’s Development Committee is a key partner on every Namoona island. Research by the Manta Trust reveals that Maldivian girls are 50% less likely than boys to snorkel, and four times more likely to feel unconfident swimming in the sea. Our swimming and ocean education programmes are designed to particularly encourage women and girls to participate, empowering them to participate in conversations and decisions that affect their future.
