Project Summary / Description:
The Guided Projects program empowers youth (18-30) to launch tangible youth-led community energy projects. Launched in 2022, the program removes traditional barriers to clean energy project development by providing training, project funding, tools, coaching and mentorship. It is a 12-month program, with 2 months of intensive coursework followed by 4 to 10 months of project implementation. The program is designed to accelerate the transition to a sustainable, equitable energy future by providing youth with critical early career project development experience that serves as a foundation for their career in sustainable energy, while also providing clean energy systems to the host communities. Since 2022, the program has electrified a primary school in Africa, replaced a diesel genset in a remote ski hill in Canada, delivered solar-powered satellite internet systems to a remote village in the Amazon, and powered modular e-mobility hubs for active transportation and cultural programming.
How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Replaces/avoids GHGs (e.g., projects that replace sources of GHGs, such as the burning of fossil fuels for electricity, heat, transport, or other energy uses)', 'Reduces GHGs (e.g., projects that reduce sources of GHGs, such as through efficiency or other changes in consumption)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Student Energy is committed to providing programming to underserved and underrepresented groups. Our SEGP program directly empowers youth from underrepresented groups (18-30) by providing the opportunity to lead clean energy projects in their communities. We specifically target the participation of individuals who have been historically and still are currently underrepresented in the energy sector, this includes racialized youth, women, LGBTQ+ youth, and young people from rural, remote, and isolated areas. Participants receive funding, coaching, mentoring, and project management experience through the program to develop and implement community-driven clean energy solutions. This approach breaks down traditional barriers to entry, such as lack of technical expertise, funding, and network connections. Additionally, as a youth-led organization, our program is unique, as our programming is designed and delivered by youth, for youth, and our staffing reflects the youth we serve.
