Impact on Underrepresented Groups:

Symmetry’s empowerment of underrepresented groups begins with its CEO, Gabe Tavas, a 25-year-old Cuban-Filipino and the original inventor of Pyrus™. Plus, through the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator’s (LACI’s) Green Jobs Workforce Development Program, Symmetry has provided three paid internships to people of color, including a woman, working in marketing and engineering. LACI, which has a stock warrant in Symmetry, is particularly effective at introducing talent from historically marginalized groups. All of the interns have expressed interest in joining Symmetry full-time if the opportunity arises, having enjoyed our company’s learning opportunities, mission, and culture. 

Additionally, Symmetry’s leadership recognizes indigenous communities are the most effective and dedicated guardians of the rainforest. Only 5% of net forest loss occurs in their territories in the Brazilian Amazon, despite those territories encompassing over half the forest area. Invading these territories, loggers have resorted to extreme measures, attacking and killing natives who resist. Symmetry's success will help relieve the violence against the Indigenous by helping to eliminate the economic incentive for illegal loggers. Further, as a public benefit corporation, Symmetry will donate proceeds to rainforest conservation groups, including Rainforest Connection (a 1% for the Planet member), Junglekeepers, Amazonia 4.0, and Floating Fab Lab.
