Project Summary / Description:
The JOY Vermiculture initiative empowers rural farmers in Karnataka, focusing on villages like Yellapur, home to the Siddhi tribe—descendants of the Bantu people. By promoting sustainable farming practices and carbon-sequestering vermiculture technology, the initiative addresses soil degradation, improves agricultural productivity, and enhances livelihoods while preserving cultural heritage and fostering environmental resilience.
How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Reduces GHGs (e.g., projects that reduce sources of GHGs, such as through efficiency or other changes in consumption)', 'Removes/stores GHGs (e.g., projects that capture, sequester, or otherwise enhance the "sinks" that accumulate and store GHGs)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
JOY Vermiculture empowers women in rural Karnataka, where most work in agriculture to support their families. Despite their critical role, they face barriers such as limited access to sustainable farming technologies, training, and financial resources. The project equips women with practical skills, tools, and micro-loans, enabling them to improve soil health, boost productivity, and increase incomes. Vermiculture also provides opportunities for women to establish micro-businesses, fostering self-reliance and resilience. These communities are home to the Siddhi tribe, descendants of the Bantu people of East Africa, who often face economic and social marginalization. JOY Vermiculture ensures their inclusion by addressing their unique challenges and providing direct access to sustainable farming solutions and economic opportunities. With local leaders like Smita Shah driving engagement, the project builds equity and resilience while tackling climate change and improving livelihoods.
