Catalytic finance for biodiverse forest carbon can tip the balance of the value of nature back to the most vulnerable communities and generate new incentives for both protection and additional restoration.  Through our peer-reviewed financial and technical assistance model, an unprecedented 70% of carbon returns go back to local communities, a majority for community benefit sharing mechanisms that improve resilience and further alleviate poverty. These trusts are carefully crafted with local leaders. They build in safeguards for vulnerable populations, through consultation with women’s groups and any identified minority group or population that might be left out of direct earnings from the forest regeneration project. 

Since the model’s launch in 2022, 28 forest creation teams, picked from a vetted pool of over 700 applicants, have already restored over 4800 ha. That work has created more than a thousand jobs, over half for women.  Dozens of new businesses are in development, from crab fattening enterprises in Indonesia to salt water tilapia farming in Ghana. Then, in addition, communities will receive between $10m and $30m over a 40-year project to reinvest in their economic development projects and in achieving SDGs. Two projects are already on that track, as verified carbon projects on Verra.
