Project Summary / Description:
EARTH will develop sustainable, accessible, and equitable refrigerant technologies and practices through research, education, and innovation to create a thriving heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, and refrigeration (HVACR) innovation ecosystem that will improve the quality of life for current and future generations.
How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Replaces/avoids GHGs (e.g., projects that replace sources of GHGs, such as the burning of fossil fuels for electricity, heat, transport, or other energy uses)', 'Reduces GHGs (e.g., projects that reduce sources of GHGs, such as through efficiency or other changes in consumption)', 'Removes/stores GHGs (e.g., projects that capture, sequester, or otherwise enhance the "sinks" that accumulate and store GHGs)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
EARTH is establishing three signature programs to empower underrepresented groups: ENRICH US (undergraduates) will enable undergraduate students from under-resourced communities to work in EARTH member labs while earning course credits. Through the EARTH Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program and the supporting network from the Student Leadership Council (SLC), ENRICH US students will gain summer research experience away from their home institutions. ENRICH GO (graduate opportunities) will host EARTH-institution graduate students (especially those from underserved communities) to attend the ENRICH GO Seminar at EARTH’s annual meetings. The ENRICH GO Seminar reinforces students’ exposure and experiences at professional conferences through oral and poster presentations. ENRICH GO will include diversity and inclusion presentations and activities, an award luncheon to highlight students’ outreach accomplishments and research achievements, and networking opportunities with industry partners. ENRICH MENTOR connects new or mid-career diverse-identity faculty and professionals with experienced mentors, in alignment with EARTH’s diversity goal of creating a supportive environment to retain personnel diversity. In addition, EARTH MENTOR will encourage formation of mentor/mentee teams to build networks and promote comfortable spaces for peer mentoring. To reward development of diverse and inclusive leadership, EARTH will recognize an Outstanding Mentor each year during the ENRICH GO seminar luncheon.
