Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Urgewald’s work has always been deeply rooted in partnerships with NGOs and affected communities, especially from the Global South. The voices and perspectives of these partners are central to our campaigns and our advocacy towards financial institutions, which are often based in the Global North. We confront financial institutions with the real-world impacts of their investments by bringing representatives of front-line communities into their offices and shareholder meetings. We readily share our data, knowledge and connections to help campaigners, particularly from Africa, Latin America and Asia strengthen their voice, reach and influence. An important avenue by which we serve underrepresented groups in the climate movement is our Finance Campaigner School (FCS). The FCS is a free online course, which empowers local movements and NGOs to lead effective finance campaigns of their own. Over half of our participants are from Southern countries and two-thirds are women. Urgewald itself is probably the only environment organization in Germany with an all-female leadership. Age-wise our staff is mixed, from the mid-twenties to the sixties and come from a dozen different countries. Diversity plays an important role both in our hiring practices and our internal culture.
