Impact on Underrepresented Groups:

This project is explicitly designed to empower groups that are underrepresented by embedding ownership, skills, and value creation within climate-vulnerable coastal communities. Small-scale fishers, many of whom are displaced by declining fish stocks, industrial fleets, and climate impacts, are transitioned from extractive livelihoods into regenerative ocean farming, creating stable, climate-positive income in regions with limited alternatives.

The de-centralised cultivation and nearshore micro-processing model lowers barriers to participation by reducing capital intensity, physical labour requirements, and technical complexity. This enables inclusion of women as owner-operators, managers, and cooperative leaders—roles traditionally under-represented in marine economies. Youth engagement is supported through training pathways linked to food systems, climate resilience, and applied technology, providing locally rooted employment rather than forced migration.

The project prioritises work in African nations and other climate-vulnerable regions, supporting people of colour and underserved communities to take active roles in food security, climate mitigation, and local enterprise development. Communities are empowered to grow native species and produce locally relevant food, feed, and fertiliser, strengthening self-sufficiency.

Within the organisation and partner network, leadership includes women, African project leads, and practitioners from the Global South, ensuring that decision-making reflects lived experience, regional knowledge, and equitable participation as the project scales globally
