Project Summary / Description:

JAIM Green Loop is an innovative climate-action initiative led by Jeune Agro-Innovateurs du Mali (JAIM). It transforms the invasive water hyacinth, one of Africa’s most destructive aquatic plants, into carbon-smart organic compost that regenerates soils, enhances food security, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

In Mali and across West Africa, water hyacinth spreads rapidly, blocking waterways, destroying biodiversity, and releasing methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Meanwhile, farmers face severe land degradation and lack access to affordable, sustainable fertilizers. JAIM Green Loop closes this ecological and agricultural gap by turning a methane-emitting waste into a regenerative resource.

The initiative uses a bio-conversion process to produce nutrient-rich compost that restores soil fertility and increases crop yields while capturing carbon in the soil. This circular system is strengthened by digital innovation through the E-Compost Platform, which ensures traceability, provides climate-smart farming advice, and connects farmers to eco-products and training via the JAIM Academy.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:

JAIM Green Loop prioritizes youth, women, and climate-vulnerable communities in all aspects of our operations. In Mali, rural women and young people often face limited access to agricultural inputs, training, and income opportunities. By providing hands-on training in organic agriculture, digital advisory tools, and compost production, we equip these groups with marketable skills, climate knowledge, and sustainable livelihoods.

Within our organization, women hold leadership and technical roles, including site management, training facilitation, and digital platform development. Over 50% of JAIM staff and 60% of our E-Compost Platform users are youth under 30. Our Green Franchise model is intentionally designed to enable youth entrepreneurs to operate small-scale compost units, generating income while contributing to climate mitigation.

JAIM also ensures inclusive decision-making, engaging women and young farmers in project design, monitoring, and scaling strategies. This participatory approach fosters leadership, amplifies voices traditionally underrepresented in climate solutions, and strengthens community resilience.

By integrating empowerment, capacity building, and climate action, JAIM demonstrates that climate innovation and social inclusion go hand in hand, creating a model where environmental restoration, youth employment, and women’s economic empowerment reinforce each other.
