The MassBu Housing initiative represents the next phase of innovation in affordable bamboo housing, building on the decade-long experience of its key partners, Kawayan Collective Agriculture Cooperative and the Base Bahay Foundation. Principal Investigator, Jonas Hauptman, Bio Design Research Group (Virginia Tech) has developed an affordable bamboo construction system, a critical step towards making bamboo viable for mid-rise-scale affordable housing in tropical, disaster-prone regions. A dynamic lifecycle assessment will be performed by Edwin Zea Escamilla of University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland to establish the environmental impact of the Massbu system. The final goal is to build a scalable housing solution by constructing a full-scale prototype in the Philippines, ultimately creating an open-source house design, replicable template for affordable, low-carbon, and net carbon-negative multi-story buildings for widespread global adoption.

MassBu is an innovative project tackling climate change through the decentralization of advanced manufacturing. It focuses on empowering communities in the Global South, particularly people of color and those most vulnerable to climate impacts. By transforming local agricultural workers and builders—groups often excluded from the high-tech climate economy—MassBu is creating active leaders in the climate transition.

The core solution of this project is resilient, affordable housing, addressing a worldwide challenge prominent in the Global South. A successful prototype will introduce a new housing technology, enabling communities and governments to better safeguard people as climate change impacts intensify annually.

The initiative is anchored at the Kawayan Collective Agriculture Cooperative, a community-based enterprise strategically located near essential bamboo resources. The cooperative provides 36 member-owners with their first regular, beneficial employment, allowing them to earn a living near their families in their provincial homes; 30% of these roles are held by women. Led by Filipino-American Architect Ray Villanueva, the project is informed by deep cultural understanding. Furthermore, MassBu is committed to long-term capacity building in sustainable construction by incorporating three Philippines-based students and one U.S. graduate student into the fabrication, assembly, and documentation team.
