Voices Above Water is a global art-based initiative by The Starving Artist that explores the intersection of climate change, migration, and water through creative storytelling. The project platforms diverse artistic voices; especially from marginalized and coastal communities via using exhibitions, workshops, and reflection tools to address eco-anxiety, climate adaptation, and environmental justice. Our art-education ignites sustainability, the initiative fosters empathy and action toward a more resilient and equitable future.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:

Voices Above Water empowers women, refugees, immigrants, youth, and climate-vulnerable populations by centering their voices in creative programming. Workshops, exhibitions, and art-based reflection cards enable participants to communicate personal experiences, explore environmental and social issues, and advocate within their communities.

For example, our climate and period sustainability workshops with Her Period Dignity in Thailand and Period With Red in Taiwan empower women to explore eco-friendly practices and address menstrual equity. The ‘Voices Above Water’ exhibition features over 30 international artists highlighting climate change impacts on vulnerable communities, including refugee youth and women from marginalized regions. Our school workshops and youth-focused art interventions provide creative tools for self-expression, mental health awareness, and climate advocacy. Underrepresented groups are also reflected in TSA’s leadership and creative team, including women, LGBTQ+ artists, artists with disabilities, and individuals from diverse cultural and geographic backgrounds. This ensures programs are inclusive, culturally sensitive, and representative. Via combining participatory workshops, exhibitions, and digital reflection tools, participants gain autonomy, skills, and visibility. These initiatives amplify marginalized voices, fostering empowerment, inclusion, and intersectional advocacy, while enabling participants to influence broader conversations on climate, mental health, and social justice.
