Project Summary / Description:

The Black Soldier Fly (BSF) Network is a circular economy initiative that transforms organic waste into high-value agricultural products while creating sustainable employment and strengthening food security. Using nature-based bioconversion technology, we convert organic waste from markets, households, and farms into high-protein animal feed and organic fertilizer.
The Innovation: Black Soldier Fly larvae naturally consume organic waste and convert it into nutrient-rich biomass containing 42% crude protein—comparable to conventional fishmeal but produced sustainably without depleting ocean resources or requiring energy-intensive industrial processing.
Triple Impact: This initiative simultaneously addresses three critical challenges facing Nigerian communities:
Environmental: Diverts 500+ tons of organic waste annually from unmanaged decomposition, reducing methane emissions, pollution, and public health hazards
Economic: Creates 30 sustainable jobs for rural youth (40% women) while reducing feed costs by 25% for 2,000+ smallholder farmers
Food Security: Produces 200+ tons of affordable, locally-available protein feed annually, strengthening livestock production and contributing to Nigeria's protein needs
Community-Led Model: Building on IDIPR's 25 years of grassroots development experience and 2,000+ farmer cooperative network, this project demonstrates how marginalized communities can lead climate solutions while building economic resilience. The hub-and-spoke design ensures scalability and replicability across Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa.

Direct Employment Empowerment:
Our project targets 40% women employment among 30 BSF production jobs, addressing gender disparities in Nigeria's green economy. Youth aged 18-35 from rural communities gain technical skills in climate-smart agriculture, preventing urban migration and building local capacity in emerging sectors.
Community-Level Impact:
The project serves 2,000+ smallholder farmers from low-income, climate-vulnerable rural communities. These farmers, often excluded from industrial agriculture systems, gain affordable sustainable feed (25% cost reduction), strengthening resilience against climate-related economic shocks.
Organizational Representation:
IDIPR's 25-year track record centers grassroots voices. Our 749 cooperative members—including significant women's participation—drive project design. Leadership includes Prof. Abeke Adesanya (Board Chairlady), ensuring women's governance representation. Community-based operations under traditional authority patronage embed local ownership.
