The Eco-Char Syngas Clean Cooking Initiative by Darubini ya Afya converts plastic and organic waste into clean syngas and biochar, providing schools and communities with an affordable, low-carbon alternative to firewood and LPG. The system captures harmful emissions, transforming waste into energy while producing biochar that locks carbon in soils and enhances fertility.
Through this circular model, we tackle deforestation, waste pollution, and rising fuel costs simultaneously. Each Eco-Char unit reduces up to 70% of cooking-related emissions and lowers school cooking costs by over 50%. The initiative also creates green jobs for youth and women, supports local climate education, and fosters sustainable land restoration through biochar use in nearby farms.

Darubini Ya Afya is youth- and women-led, employing and training women artisans and young technicians in clean energy fabrication. Over 60% of our workforce is under 30. The project directly benefits rural schools and communities reliant on unsustainable firewood. We prioritize hiring local youth for assembly, training, and outreach — turning them into climate entrepreneurs. Women’s groups also engage in biochar handling and agricultural integration. The initiative promotes inclusion by providing affordable clean energy access to marginalized schools while building leadership among young innovators tackling climate and energy poverty simultaneously.
