Project Summary / Description:
“Agricare Woman Farmers Centers” are integrated, women-focused hubs designed to drastically reduce post-harvest food loss and expand economic opportunities for smallholder women farmers. These centers combine either or both of three critical functions in one accessible facility: passive and solar-powered cold storage to extend produce shelf-life, solar dryers to further prevent spoilage, and energy-efficient grinding equipment that enables on-site value addition. By leveraging renewable energy and climate-smart technologies, the model preserves food quality, reduces waste, carbon emissions and improves market prices for farmers.
How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Replaces/avoids GHGs (e.g., projects that replace sources of GHGs, such as the burning of fossil fuels for electricity, heat, transport, or other energy uses)', 'Reduces GHGs (e.g., projects that reduce sources of GHGs, such as through efficiency or other changes in consumption)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
Our project is built around empowering women farmers, who are often excluded from climate action and access to clean technology. We place women at the center of every AgriCare Center, as users, trainees, and decision-makers. Over 80% of our beneficiaries are women, and they lead or have a voice in local farmer’s groups. Within our organization, women and youth also hold key leadership roles, guiding training, outreach, and operations. By giving women access to renewable energy, market tools, and climate-smart training, we help them earn more, reduce emissions, and become visible leaders in the climate transition within their communities.
