The Hybrid Intelligent Solar Dryer (HISD) Initiative develops and deploys decentralized clean-energy drying systems that reduce post-harvest losses, prevent organic waste generation, and mitigate methane emissions by avoiding biomass decomposition. The initiative focuses on scalable, locally fabricable preservation infrastructure for smallholder farmers, cooperatives, and agro-processors.
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
The Hybrid Intelligent Solar Dryer primarily serves smallholder farmers and informal food processors in rural and peri-urban communities, many of whom are women and youth operating within climate-vulnerable agricultural systems. Post-harvest losses disproportionately affect these groups due to limited access to energy, infrastructure, and modern preservation technologies. By providing an affordable, clean-energy drying solution, the project increases income stability, reduces food waste, and strengthens resilience to climate variability. Women are heavily represented in food processing and local market distribution across our target communities. By improving drying efficiency and product quality, the initiative directly enhances their earning potential and reduces exposure to smoke-based or unsafe preservation methods. Kinetic Power Systems LTD is youth-led, with leadership under 30 at the time of founding, reflecting representation from underrepresented African innovators in the climate technology space. As the project scales, we prioritize local fabrication, technical training, and skills transfer to young technicians and rural communities, ensuring inclusive participation in both climate mitigation and economic opportunity.
