Primary Project Category:
Name of Project:
Year Project Originated:
Project Summary / Description:
BioLite is leveraging our existing solar distribution networks to rapidly and cost-effectively expand clean cooking access in Senegal, Zambia, Uganda, and Nigeria. While solar home systems have scaled in these countries, over 70% of households still cook on smoky, rudimentary stoves with severe health, financial, and climate impacts; BioLite aims to change that.
How Project Affects Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions:
['Reduces GHGs (e.g., projects that reduce sources of GHGs, such as through efficiency or other changes in consumption)']
Impact on Underrepresented Groups:
The primary users of our stoves are women, who are typically responsible for cooking and fuel collection and face the greatest health risks from smoky cooking. As such, they are the main beneficiaries across all of our cookstove projects, and we design our products and operations with their needs in mind. We emphasize inclusive design and targeted training that help agents communicate the value of clean cooking in ways that align with women’s priorities—health, savings, and ease—and support families in overcoming cultural or household barriers to adoption. Our project also drives job creation for both men and women, primarily African people of color, offering training, income-generating opportunities, and upskilling in sales, technical topics, teamwork, and leadership. These roles are particularly well suited to women, who often face challenges in accessing and maintaining traditional employment. Flexible, sales-based work can more easily be balanced with family and personal responsibilities, especially in contexts where women are expected to manage the home and care for their families.
