Our project, actively implemented by FEPAD Burundi, focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions through plastic waste valorization, environmental education, and sustainable livelihood creation for marginalized youth, particularly from the Batwa community in Nyakararo, Burundi. By transforming plastic waste into reusable materials and promoting climate-friendly practices, the initiative directly contributes to a circular economy, climate resilience, and social inclusion. The project is ongoing, measurable, and scalable, aligning with FEPAD Burundi’s mission to empower vulnerable populations while promoting environmental sustainability.

Impact on Underrepresented Groups:

Our project, Plastic Valorization and Climate Resilience for Marginalized Youth in Nyakararo, Burundi, specifically targets marginalized youth, particularly from the Batwa community, who face social, economic, and environmental vulnerabilities. By providing training in plastic collection, processing, environmental stewardship, and sustainable livelihoods, the initiative equips these youth with skills, income-generating opportunities, and climate resilience knowledge.

Women and girls are actively engaged in all stages of the project—from community mobilization and awareness campaigns to hands-on plastic processing—ensuring gender-inclusive participation. Youth leadership is central: project committees are youth-led, fostering decision-making, responsibility, and advocacy skills.

Within FEPAD Burundi, underrepresented groups are strongly represented: 80% of our staff are women, and a significant portion of our operational team comes from marginalized communities, including Batwa youth. This structure ensures that project design, implementation, and monitoring reflect the perspectives and priorities of those most affected by climate vulnerability.

Through this dual focus on environmental impact and social inclusion, the initiative not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions but also empowers communities that are historically underrepresented in climate action, demonstrating a scalable, equitable model for climate resilience and sustainable development in Burundi.
